GB Hefeweizen pours a hazy golden orange color, with a large, fluffy white head. The aroma is slightly sweet and fruity, with the classic banana, citrus and bubble gum ester character of German Hefeweizen yeast, as well as a touch of toasted bread. The banana ester flavors are featured prominently on the palate, along with a mild floral hop character that is quite restrained. The floral hops combine with delicate spicy clove notes to provide a pleasant balance with the sweetness from the fruity yeast character. Despite the impression of sweetness, the beer finishes medium dry, with spritzy carbonation lingering on the palate. GB Hefeweizen is brewed with 65% malted wheat, making it medium bodied, yet light and fluffy on the tongue, almost like the sensation of eating cotton candy. Hefeweizen is very versatile and pairs well with a wide variety of foods. The classic pairing is Bavarian Weisswurst sausage, but you can also enjoy it with brunch dishes like French toast or pancakes, as well as grilled chicken tacos.

Dan Gordon is one of the most sought-after brewers in the country, while Dean Biersch, an experienced restaurateur and beer lover, is searching for a partner to help open a brewery restaurant. A mutual friend arranges a meeting, so they sit down, start talking beer, and the rest is history.
Dan Gordon’s lifelong dream was realized in March of 1997 when the first batch of beer was brewed at our state-of-the-art brewing and bottling facility, located in San Jose, California. The 114,000 square foot facility was designed and engineered by Dan Gordon, who did not spare any detail. Although we recreate old world authentic recipes, we use modern day techniques and technology. The brewery operates 24/7 and uses the highest quality two-row malted barley, Hallertauer hops, and German yeast from Weihenstephan, to ensure that quality is never sacrificed.
Hefeweizen beers hail from Bavaria and 'Weizen' means 'wheat' and 'hefe' means 'yeast', thus the cloudy appearance. Special yeasts are used to produce the hallmark aromas of banana and clove. The darker versions of this style are referred to as 'dunkels'. Low to moderately strong banana and clove flavor. The balance and intensity of the phenol and ester components can vary but the best examples are reasonably balanced and fairly prominent. Optionally, a very light to moderate vanilla character and/or faint bubblegum notes can accentuate the banana flavor, sweetness, and roundness; neither should be dominant if present. The soft, somewhat bready or grainy flavor of wheat is complementary, as is a slightly grainy-sweet malt character. Hop flavor is very low to none, and hop bitterness is very low to moderately low. Well-rounded, flavorful palate with a relatively dry finish. The perception of sweetness is more due to the absence of hop bitterness than actual residual sweetness; a sweet or heavy finish would significantly impair drinkability.
